Ukulele

I have been playing ukulele since the fall of 2011. Prior to that, I had never played guitar, mandolin, banjo, or sitar. Actually, had never played any stringed instrument! My only musical experience is some piano, which I play more or less regularly, and  the trombone, which I played in high school and university marching band. I’ve also done a little music theory.

Notwithstanding any of that… the reason I play any instrument is for the enjoyment of hearing a song, learning a song, and re-interpreting that song for myself. My intention is to collect here the songs that I find myself returning to on the ukulele… the ones that are in my notebook, to be sure, but also the ones I feel worth sharing. The songs:

Song Title Files Notes Audio Player
My KLR Chart,
MP3
An original tune, about science fiction and my KLR 650.
I’ll Fly Away Chart, MP3 Gospel tune, based on the Johnny Cash version
The Lumberjack Song Chart, MP3 From Monty Python
Can’t Help Falling in Love Chart, MP3 An abbreviated version of the Elvis classic, with vocal harmonies
Ode to Joy (partial) MP3 Some fun with Beethoven
Over the Rainbow MP3 By H. Arlen & E.Y. Harburg, but inspired by Glee, which was inspired by Brudda Iz!
It’s not Easy Being Green MP3 By Joe Raposo, as made famous by Kermit the Frog
Edelweiss MP3 No song book is complete without a little Rodgers & Hammerstein!
Yesterday Chart,

Can’t resist this awesome Paul McCartney song…
The Boxer Chart,

Simon and Garfunkel … one of the best songs ever!
Wayfaring Stranger MP3 A hauntingly simple, traditional tune.
Hymne MP3 One of my first favorite musicians, Vangelis is truly “the man.” Hymne is from his Opera Sauvage.
Anson Homestead Garden MP3 To the tune of “Country Gardens” we re-wrote the lyrics to suit our little homestead!
Marines’ Hymn MP3 The hymn of the US Marine Corps, author unknown.
Amazing Grace Chart, MP3 My arrangement of the traditional tune, performed for my Uncle Len Paradis at his funeral.

Beautiful arrangement. The ukulele was my dad’s favorite instrument. He would entertain us kids with songs he learned while stationed in Hawaii. I’ll peek into your blog now and then and see if you left something for us to hear. Pat Sherman.
